Membrane transporters have been my passion since my graduation studies at Groningen University and PhD thesis work at the ETH in Zurich. During that time, I made first contact with multidrug efflux pumps.
The molecular mechanisms of multidrug transporters continued to fascinate me, and I decided to study their structure via X-ray crystallography. I started learning crystallization techniques at the University of Leeds and learned crystallography during my ETH Zürich post-doc time from Kay Diederichs at the University of Konstanz.
Today, we focus on the polyspecific phenotype and the inhibition of RND efflux pumps in collaboration with experts in molecular dynamics (Attilio Vargiu, Giulliano Malloci, Paolo Ruggerone, University of Cagliari, Italy), single-particle cryo-EM and cryo-electron tomography (Achilleas Frangakis, Goethe University Frankfurt; Laetitia Daury, Olivier Lambert, University of Bordeaux), medicinal chemistry (Marion Flipo, University of Lille) and chemical biology (Ruben Hartkoorn, Institut Pasteur Lille).
